Rick Steves Tour

Pompeii

Pompeii was one of the reasons why I selected this particular tour. I have always been facinated with Pompeii after seeing an exibit when I was in fourth grade.

During my visit at Pompeii, we were guided through the cobblestone streets and was amazed at how advanced their civilization was during that time with plumbing, irrigation systems, indoor toilets, stove, a gymnasium (for men only), etc.

One note to say about Pompeii that suprised and somewhat bothered me...

It was evident that the people in Pompeii were pretty free regarding sex. There were displays, sculptures, paintings, even signs carved in brick on some of the buildings representative of phalic symbols and male genitalia. There was also a brothal where women worked as prositutes and men visited. In this brothel, there were paintings illustrating various sex positions and one painting of two men engaged in a sexual act displayed above the different rooms. Men would choose what room to go to that corresponded with what they wanted. It was also stated that it was common for men to have sexual relationships outside of their marriage. Yet, if the "other woman" got pregnant, the man would only claim the child if it was a boy. Women didn't appear to be regarded with much respect or value in this community.

I have left out photos of artwork, paintings, etc. that displayed this aspect of their culture.
