Day trip to Villa Casale and Agriturismo on the way to Cefalu.
Villa Casale
Villa Casale is located 3 miles outside of Piazza Armerina. This Roman villa contains some of the best preserved mosaics from the 4th century in the world. The mosaics are left in place and cover the entire floors throughout what was used as a luxurious hunting lodge by the Roman emperor Maximian. Elevated metal catwalks allow tourists to admire the mosaics without touching the floor. It was impressive to see an art form that requires meticulous detail at such a massive scale.
This was a bath or "steam room". Water beneath was heated. The vertical pipes on the right produced steam from the heated water below.
"Erotica" room
But the only thing "erotic" was the emperor's wife exposing her bare bottom.
